Health Department investigating staffing complaints at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital

The state Health Department was on-site in recent days at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital in Amherst, investigating complaints filed late last year under New Yorkโ€™s clinical staffing law, according to the unions that represent workers at the Kaleida Health facility.

Communications Workers of America District 1 confirmed the Health Department was on-site at Millard Fillmore on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Further, CWA Local 1168 posted on its Facebook page Tuesday to tell its members to answer Health Department representatives โ€œhonestly and tell them about the continued staffing crisis.โ€

โ€œWe are pleased that the Department of Health is on the ground investigating what we have long known โ€“ that unsafe staffing conditions continue to plague health care workers in New York hospitals,โ€ said Debora Hayes, area director for CWA District 1.

โ€œThe visit at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital is a direct result of union members sounding the alarm, and we look forward to continuing to work with the Department of Health, the State, and our health care facilities to address unsafe staffing, in order to improve the safety and well-being of health care workers and their patients,โ€ she said.

The visit comes after CWA in late November submitted nearly 8,000 unresolved staffing complaints across several hospitals, including Kaleida Healthโ€™s Buffalo General Medical Center and Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital; Catholic Health Systemโ€™s hospitals; Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira; and New York-Presbyterian, a downstate provider.
