Syracuse, N.Y. ― The play still stands out in Rex Trobridge’s mind 60 years later.

The Syracuse basketball team was playing Pittsburgh at Manley Field House in the 1963-64 season. Trobridge, a 6-foot-9 center, was a sophomore. He had been part of Syracuse coach Fred Lewis’ first recruiting class; a group that also included the legendary Dave Bing and a spindly, bespectacled walk-on named Jim Boeheim.
