Portraits, candles, and flowers adorned memorials worldwide on Friday as thousands paid homage to Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny, who reportedly passed away at the age of 47 in an Arctic prison colony.
The Federal Penitentiary Service said Navalny felt unwell after a walk on Friday and collapsed. An ambulance arrived, but paramedics failed to revive him, the agency reported.
Navalny’s team hasn’t received immediate confirmation of his passing.
In December, Navalny was relocated from his previous prison in central Russia to a “special regime” penal colony above the Arctic Circle, the highest security level of prisons in Russia. In August, Navalny was sentenced to 19 years in prison on charges of extremism, and prior to that, he had received nine-year sentences in two separate convictions.
During his time behind bars, he was frequently placed in solitary confinement.
