The 2023-24 boys’ high school basketball season on Staten Island is winding down quickly and with more than three-quarters of the season complete, there’s been plenty of time to evaluate this year’s crop of players.
And, needless to say, a number of the student-athletes who competed turned in terrific seasons.

It certainly wasn’t easy to put a list of candidates together, but we’ve got one and have included a number of individuals who shined throughout the current campaign. Obviously, there’s numerous players who played well this year, but these are the players we believe will be in the conversation for the prestigious award.
The list is in alphabetical order:
Alonzo Archbold (Curtis): The sophomore point forward averaged 20.2 points per game and surpassed 20 points or more 11 times with a career-high 41 points in the Warriors’ season-finale loss against Moore Catholic. The 6-foot-7 Archbold was also Curtis’ leading rebounder.
Xavier Cardona (Port Richmond): The 6-foot-5 Cardona currently averages 16.8 points per game with a career-high 35 markers in an overtime win over New Dorp. The senior is the Raiders’ top rebounder as well.
Mekhi Jackson (Susan Wagner): The three-year varsity player is currently averaging 15.5 points per game with a season-high 25 in a win over Boys & Girls. The 6-foot-4 senior is Wagner’s leading rebounder and shot blocker, as well.
Nicholas Lam (Tottenville): The point guard turned in a superb season as he not only leads the Pirates in scoring (22.0 ppg. average and 33 treys in 16 games), but he’s a terrific ball-handler who rebounds well. His 30-point performance led Tottenville to an upset victory over Susan Wagner in the SIHSL Tournament, where the Pirates made their third title-game appearance in the tourney’s 30-year history.
