College baseball: St. Joseph-by-the-Sea product Jackson Tucker homers in St. John’s upset of No. 2 Florida (video)

It was considered a major upset when St. John’s upended No. 2 Florida, last year’s national runner-up, in Friday’s season-opener — but Staten Islanders were hardly surprised to witness Jackson Tucker go deep.

The junior outfielder, a Staten Island native and St. Joseph-by-the-Sea product, crushed a solo homer into the left field bleachers during the eighth inning of a surprising 9-5 win over the Gators. Tucker finished the evening with two hits in six at-bats, including the solo blast, which pushed the Johnnies’ lead to 8-5.

Last year, as a sophomore at St. John’s, he led the Red Storm and tied for third in the Big East with 25 stolen bases in 31 attempts. He slashed .294/.388/.425 and hit two home runs while driving in 17 RBI on the season.
