Tom Cruise reportedly wants major change to his movie career

Syracuse native Tom Cruise wants to make a major change to his movie career as part of his new deal with Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, according to a new report from Variety. Sources say the actor discussed possible films that could kick off their nonexclusive “strategic partnership,” including an “Edge of Tomorrow” sequel and Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming “The Movie Critic” (which currently does not have a major studio distributor).

Word is Cruise wants to move beyond action films like “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Mission: Impossible” to “return to working with auteurs like Paul Thomas Anderson,” according to Variety. Cruise has never won an Academy Award despite four nominations for acting; he was last nominated for his role in Anderson’s 1999 movie “Magnolia.” Cruise previously worked with acclaimed directors like Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese and Stanley Kubrick — and it sounds like he could be interested in a Tarantino role because the filmmaker is “the rare auteur who marries box office performance and awards-season heat.”

Cruise’s upcoming movies include a “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning” followup and an untitled film project that would shoot in outer space, plus potentially “Top Gun 3″ and “Edge of Tomorrow 2″ (also rumored to be titled “Live Die Repeat and Repeat”).
