The New York Mets have not played their first spring training games, but they’ll already be without their top starting pitcher when they do so — and likely much longer.
President of baseball operations David Stearns told reporters Thursday in Port St. Lucie, Florida, that Kodai Senga has a “moderate right posterior capsule strain” in his right shoulder that will likely cause him to start the season on the injured list.
While the Mets built up their rotation depth this offseason, losing their No. 1 starter won’t be easy to overcome. Will that necessitate an outside addition?
“I don’t think so,” Stearns said. We’re always going to be opportunistic and hear what’s out there. But I don’t think it really changes the thought process.”
Stearns cited “plenty of options,” and confirmed that he considers Tylor Megill, José Butto and Joey Lucchesi as the next up.
As currently constructed, the Mets’ rotation includes Jose Quintana, Luis Severino, Sean Manaea, Adrian Houser and Megill.
But if the Mets decide to look outside the organization, plenty of pitchers remain unsigned, starting with frontline lefties Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery. In addition, Michael Lorenzen, Mike Clevinger, Zack Greinke, Domingo Germán, Matthew Boyd, Noah Syndergaard and Brad Keller are also on the market.
