Mitchell Robinson latest: When could Knicks get their dominant center back?

The shorthanded Knicks could be getting a major boost in the frontcourt sooner rather than later with center Mitchell Robinson working his way back.ย 

ESPNโ€™s Tim Bontemps reported on the Lowe Post Podcast that the 7-foot big man could return to the court in March after undergoing ankle surgery in December.

He was initially prescribed an eight-to-10-week timetable for reevaluation, but just a week after undergoing the procedure, it was reported that the Knicks applied for a Disabled Player Exception worth $7.8 million upon the projection that Robinson would miss the rest of the 2023-24 season.

That does not appear to be the case now. Robinson has posted multiple videos of himself without a cast, brace, or walking boot of any kind, including a video of him working out last week with the caption, โ€œgetting playoff ready!โ€

Robinsonโ€™s career has been hampered by injuries, missing 10 or more games in five of his six seasons and 20 or more three times. He was enjoying his most dominant season as a pro, leading the NBA with 112 offensive rebounds in 21 games before suffering that ankle injury during a Dec. 8 game against the Boston Celtics.ย 

In his absence, Isaiah Hartenstein had performed admirably off the bench while Precious Achiuwa โ€” acquired alongside OG Anunoby in the trade with the Toronto Raptors in late December โ€” added invaluable depth.ย 

Getting Robinson back would provide the Knicks with a dominant force down low to further bolster one of the top defenses in the league since the Anunoby deal and just in time for what could be a lengthy playoff run if reinforcements come back on time.ย
