Syracuse basketball’s Peter Carey clears concussion protocol; center available vs. Notre Dame

Syracuse, N.Y. ― After missing the last four games, Syracuse center Peter Carey has cleared concussion protocol and will be available for the Orange in its game against Notre Dame today at the JMA Wireless Dome.

Carey, a 6-foot-11 center, suffered a concussion in practice on Friday, Feb. 9. He did not play in the Orange’s game against Clemson the next day. He has subsequently been forced to sit out games against Notre Dame, Georgia Tech and NC State.

However, according to SU officials, Carey will be in uniform and able to play in SU’s home game against Notre Dame, which begins at noon.

Carey is averaging just 0.8 points and 1.1 rebounds per game in 11 appearances this season; however, his playing time was expected to increase when Benny Williams, a 6-9 junior forward, was dismissed from the basketball program three weeks ago.

The loss of Carey had greatly diminished Syracuse’s frontcourt depth as Syracuse has also been without starting center Naheem McLeod since mid-January when the 7-foot-7 junior was ruled out for the remainder of the season with a foot injury.

In McLeod’s absence, Syracuse coach Adrian Autry has started Maliq Brown, a 6-8 power forward, at center. Justin Taylor, a 6-6 small forward/shooting guard, has started every game this season at power forward.

In Carey’s absence over the last four games, Autry has gone to Mounir Hima, a 6-11 junior, for added depth at center. Hima has played in 13 of Syracuse’s 27 games this season, but played in each of the four that Carey had to sit out.
