This weekend at the MVP Arena in Albany, four remarkable student-athletes from Section V emerged as state champions at the boys wrestling individual championships, showcasing their exceptional skills and determination. Elijah Diakomihalis of Hilton conquered the 190 lbs category in Division I, capping off an undefeated season at 46-0 and securing his place as a Cornell commit. His victory marks him as the 13th state champion in his program’s history.
In the 210 lbs category, Churchville Chili’s Coy Raines also ascended to the top, finishing his impressive season with a 43-2 record and becoming only the third wrestler from his school to win a state wrestling title. Meanwhile, in Division II, Attica-Batavia’s Casper Stewart dominated the 145 lbs category, concluding his senior year with a 54-2 record before joining the Army, and Braidon Woodward of Pal-Mac triumphed at 170 lbs with a stellar 54-1 record in his final year.
The championships also saw strong performances from other Section V wrestlers, with Pittsford’s Samson McKissick-Staley and Christopher Noto of Honeoye Falls-Lima securing second place in their respective weight categories. In total, 28 wrestlers from Section V achieved top-eight finishes, underscoring the depth of talent in the region.
