Both of the homes of Buffalo’s sports franchises are doing some renovations.
The Buffalo Sabres announced Monday that some of the upgrades needed at the KeyBank Center are being planned before the start of next season, and ownership will foot the bill for them.
Among the improvements will be a state-of-the-art videoboard and new roof to the downtown arena, which opened in 1996. The Sabres on Monday named the companies they’ll be working with on these projects.
Sabres officials had said in August that in future years, the team also will address the seating bowl in the 28-year-old building. The team has hired Populous to help with the plans.
A spokesperson for the team said the Sabres will not be releasing the dollar amount of the project but that it will be fully funded by the team.
โFrom an ownership perspective, I have put a great deal of thought and research into the fan experience over the last year and feel it is time to begin making gradual upgrades to our arena that will play a key role in enhancing game day for our fans,โ Terry Pegula, who has owned the team since 2011, said in a statement. โWe are thrilled about the many projects we have in the pipeline, none bigger than a new videoboard.โ
Mitsubishi Electric will provide the technology for the 27-foot-by-43-foot videoboard. The screen size will roughly double that of the current videoboard inside KeyBank Center, with upgrades in resolution and functionality.
Other videoboard features include four fully digital corner panels, as well as two screens on the boardโs underbelly to provide additional angles for fans in the lower rows.
The team said it met with multiple suppliers and studied videoboards throughout the NHL to identify a model suitable for KeyBank Center.
