New law speeds up storm damage claims process

ALBANY – It took 11 years to pass the state legislature and be signed into law, but a new measure requires insurance companies to provide an answer to a storm-related damage claim in 30 days.

Those companies can sometimes take up to six months to render a decision, but Senate Sponsor James Skoufis (D, Cornwall) said his new law changes that.

“The moment I introduced this bill, there have been lobbyists on behalf of the industry each and every year did everything they could to kill this bill,” he said.

Skoufis said the legislation was borne out of the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy back in 2012.
