Orange County allocates $1 million for special prosecutor in Holley murder trial

GOSHEN – Orange County is going to set aside $1 million to cover expenses of a special prosecutor in the murder trial of Edward Holley, who is accused of killing Megan McDonald of the Town of Wallkill 20 years ago.

A special district attorney is needed because county DA David Hoovler recused himself due to a potential conflict of interest when he was in private practice.

Chief Assistant DA Christopher Borek said the money would be used for the special prosecutor to investigate and present evidence and witness testimony.

“If the case goes to trial it will be more expensive to them. My understanding is speaking to special prosecutors is because of the age of the case, they are going to have to spend some money speaking to witnesses who have moved out of state, and the case involves expert testimony and those types of expenses,” he said.

Holley has denied killing the young woman who was attending college and working part-time in a shopping center.
