Staten Island obituaries for Feb. 29, 2024: Ida Merlino, 103, of Merlino Photo Studio, remembered

Ida Merlino, 103, died on Feb. 27, 2024. She was born and raised on Staten Island, to two Italian immigrants. She began working at her father’s photography business, Merlino Photo Studio in Port Richmond, at just 14 years old and continued running the business well into her 90s. “As the oldest in a family of 12 children, Ida worked with our father and the business all her life,” said Ida’s sister, Dr. Ann Merlino, an Advance Woman of Achievement in the Class of 1999. In 2003, Minister Giorgio Radicati, general of Italy in New York, recognized Ida as a prominent Staten Islander of Italian heritage on Italian National Day at the Botanical Gardens at Snug Harbor. She was known by her friends and family as someone who was a leader and caregiver, being credited for the success of her 11 younger siblings, as well as much of the next generation. She will be remembered by the large family of sisters, brothers, brothers and sisters-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews. Read the full obituary on SILive.com.

Stephen Moser Jr., 78, died on Feb. 1, 2024, in Rutland, Vermont. Born in the Bronx, N.Y., Steve was a computer programmer. During his years in Youngstown, Ohio, he was a firearms safety instructor and member of the Vienna Fish and Game Sportsman’s Club. He was involved in his local communities by being a Wood Badge certified Scoutmaster, Snug Harbor Little League coach, poll worker, Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus, and an advocate for the preservation of Staten Island’s Greenbelt, Pouch Camp, and Pine Oak Woods. His favorite activities were fishing and camping with his family, being an avid outdoorsman. Steve is survived by his four children, his former wife Mary Moser of Staten Island, his eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Read the full obituary on SILive.com.
