Another year, another sectional title for the Lyons boys basketball team as they cruised past Pembroke, 71-54, in the Class C1 finals on Saturday afternoon at the Blue Cross Arena.
It’s the program’s fifth sectional title in the last seven years and 22nd overall, the second-most in Section V, behind only East High’s 27.
The Lions jumped out to an early lead and never trailed in the contest, outscoring Pembroke 34-23 in the first half and 37-31 in the second half despite not having senior Mike Briggs on the court for the final 16 minutes due to an injury.
Three players scored in double figures for Lyons, led by the big man Jamire Johnson, who poured in a game-high 26 points and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Devyn Willams notched 13 points, while Dezmen Bell added 10. Briggs knocked down three three-pointers and joined Williams and Bell on the All-Tournament Team.
Jayden Bridge led the Dragons with 13 points, while Tyson Totten and Avery Ferreira split 24 points.
The Lions improved to 21-2 on the season and will face the winner of Byron-Bergen and Notre Dame Batavia on Wednesday night. The location and time are to be determined.
