The Buffalo Bills are expected to add a wide receiver early in the 2024 NFL Draft, but that doesn’t mean that the team won’t address the position in free agency as well.
Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald reported on Monday that Buffalo could potentially pursue New England Patriots wide receiver Kendrick Bourne if he hits free agency. According to Callahan’s sources, Buffalo is one of three teams who previously expressed interest and could swoop in for the receiver in free agency this year.
Callahan elaborated on Buffalo’s prior interest in Bourne.
“According to one source familiar with the wide receiver market, if the Pats do not re-sign Bourne, history indicates they might lose him to a division foe,” Callahan wrote. “The Jets were among the teams that showed interest in Bourne over the last 18 months, when a Patriots source said their front office received trade calls at the end of training camp in 2022 and 2023. The Pats told those teams, including the Raiders and Rams, that Bourne was not available and kept him through his ACL tear late last October. Prior to signing with the Patriots as a free agent in 2021, Bourne also received interest from the Bills and Texans, per source.”
Prior to his ACL tear this season, Bourne, 28, caught 37 passes for 406 yards and four touchdowns in eight games (5 starts). Although Bourne was on pace for his best season as a pro, adding a receiver coming off a serious injury would come with some risk. Bourne is reportedly ahead of schedule on his road to recovery and could be ready to play Week 1.
Heading into free agency Spotrac calculates Bourne’s market value at $4.8 million per year.
