Arrests made in Babylon body parts case, source says

Suffolk police have made multiple arrests linked to the body parts found in a popular Babylon Village park last week, aย law enforcement source said Tuesday.

The arrests were made following the execution of a search warrant. More information about the arrests is expected to be released later Tuesday.ย 

Police were seen conducting a search of a home on Railroad Avenue in Amityville Tuesday morning. A Suffolk police Command Center vehicle was parked outside the home overnight, and a crime scene van arrived at the home shortly before 11 a.m. on Tuesday.ย 

A man identified in public records as the owner of the Railroad Avenue house declined to comment on the search Tuesday morning before hanging up on a Newsday reporter.ย 

Suffolk County police located body parts investigators believe belong to two unknown victims on the perimeter of a popular Babylon Village parkย last week.

Det. Lt. Kevin Beyrer, the commanding officer of the Suffolk County Police Departmentโ€™s Homicide Unit, said last week that remains appearing to belong to a woman โ€” a head, legs and arm โ€” were found late Thursday on the west side of Southards Pond Park, not far from where police found a manโ€™s severed right and left arms earlier Thursday on the east side of the park. Police later said they found a part of the womanโ€™s other leg.

When asked if investigators suspected that the street gang MS-13 โ€” known for using machetes to slay victims โ€” was responsible for the violence, Beyrer said police were investigating all possible motives and potential suspects. MS-13 has been relatively quiet on Long Island since federal authorities launched a massive crackdown following the 2016 killings of two teenage girls and the 2017 killings of four young men โ€” slayings that authorities have alleged were committed by MS-13 gang members.

The remains discovered Thursday were found on the edges of Southards Pond Park, just south of Sunrise Highway, abutting a residential neighborhood.
