The Buffalo Sabres made a trade Wednesday afternoon, sending forward Casey Mittelstadt to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for defenseman Bowen Byram.
Mittelstadt, 25, is set to become a restricted free agent this summer and was Buffalo’s leading point producer with 47 points (14 goals, 33 assists). He was drafted by the Sabres eighth overall in the 2017 draft and recorded 186 points (62 goals, 124 assists) over 339 games.
Byram, 22, was drafted fourth overall by Colorado in the 2019 draft and is under contract for one more year. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound blueliner won a Stanley Cup with the Avalanche and has tallied 63 points (23 goals, 40 assists) in 146 games.
This is the first of several moves the Sabres are expected to make before Friday’s 3 p.m. trade deadline.
