Geneva City Council, in its latest meeting on March 6, gave the green light to a new Paddlecraft Rack Program aimed at enhancing access to Seneca Lake.
The program, set to be a boon for kayak, canoe, and paddleboard enthusiasts, is designed to allow residents easy and quick access to the water.
Spearheaded by the Department of Planning and Economic Development in collaboration with the Recreation Department and Department of Public Works, the initiative calls for the construction of two racks capable of holding 12 paddlecraft each near the Geneva boat ramp for the 2024 season.
This initiative represents a step towards maximizing the recreational potential of Seneca Lake, aligning with the city’s plans to increase lake access through both significant investments and smaller, impactful projects.
The racks will be available for community members to rent from May through October, promising a hassle-free way to enjoy the lake. Highlighting the program’s popularity in nearby communities, the council emphasized the potential of these racks to significantly improve the lakefront experience for residents.
Financially, the program is designed to be self-sustaining, expected to break even in its inaugural year and generate additional revenue for future waterfront enhancements in the subsequent years. The proposed rental fees for rack spaces are projected to cover the costs of construction, installation, and management, making this a revenue-neutral initiative for the city.
