Public will have its say next week on state DOT plan to widen Harlem Road in West Seneca

Residents and other interested parties will get to learn more about a proposed $7 million road repair and widening project on Harlem Road in West Seneca at a public hearing scheduled for Wednesday by the state Department of Transportation.ย

The hearing, in an open forum format, will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. atย Erie 1 BOCES, 355 Harlem Road, West Seneca. A formal presentation on the project will be at 5 p.m.

According to DOT officials, the project will restore the pavement and improve pedestrian safety on the section of Harlem Road (Route 240) between Route 400 and Mineral Springs Road.ย

The state’s published legal notice for the public hearing makes reference to eminent domain. Susan S. Surdej, the DOT’s Buffalo region spokeswoman, said no structures will need to be taken for the project.

“The proposed project to enhance safety and improve mobility along State Route 240 will require the acquisition of a small segments of property from approximately 27 property owners along the right-of-way within the project limits in order to upgrade sidewalks and curb ramps. Impacted property owners have already been notified and NYSDOT is working with the community to minimize impacts as much as feasible,” Surdej said this week in an email.

West Seneca Town Supervisor Gary A. Dickson said he learned of the proposed project about a year ago after visiting the Greater Buffalo Niagara Regional Transportation Committee website. He said did not anticipate that it would be disruptive for town residents.

“I don’t think this project is going to have a lot of impact. It’s not a place where there are a lot of houses. So it shouldn’t be a big deal,” Dickson said.

The proposed Route 240 road reconstruction project includes milling and paving on Harlem Road from Route 400 to the bridge over Indian Church Road. The section from Indian Church Road to Mineral Springs Road will be rebuilt and widened to include a center lane for left turns, new curbing,…
