Brandon Beane was meticulous in free agency last season after seeing Tremaine Edmunds sign a four year, $72 million contract with the Chicago Bears. As long as the team signed fewer free agents than they lost to other teams, Buffalo would be in line for a compensatory pick.
On Friday, the Bills were awarded with a compensatory pick for losing Edmunds, but it probably wasnโt the pick that they were expecting. A quick scan of third round picks given to teams–what Buffalo was expecting to receive for losing Edmunds–did not have the Bills included. The Jacksonville Jaguars, Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers were the only four teams given compensatory picks in the third round.
Buffalo, meanwhile, was awarded a fourth round selection, pick No. 133, for losing losing Edmunds.
Projections saw Buffalo receiving a third round pick for Edmunds and Beane said he was projecting a third round pick for Buffalo as well, but the formula used by the league did not work out in the teamโs favor. As it stands, the team does not have a third round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
