Police said they shot and killed a man who charged at officers with a knife after a dispute at a party in Queens Friday night.

NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey told reporters that just before 7 p.m. Thursday, police were called to an apparent assault on 62nd Avenue in the Forest Hills section of Queens, where a family party with children was underway.

A woman emerged bleeding from her stomach when the three uniformed officers and a sergeant arrived. A man behind her was holding a knife and lunged toward the police, Maddrey said.

โ€œAs soon as they walk out of the staircase, a male is charging at them with a knife,โ€ he said. โ€œThey give commands to drop [the knife], the male didn’t stop. The sergeant tried to use his taser but the two other officers, they used their weapons.โ€

Police did not release the name of the dead man, but said he was 46 years old. Police shot him four times and he was taken to a hospital where he ultimately โ€œsuccumbed to his injuries,โ€ Maddrey said.

The woman is alive and is being treated for two stab wounds to her torso. Police said Saturday sheโ€™s in critical condition.

NYPD officials said itโ€™s yet unclear how the dispute arose.
