Team USA faced steep competition in the quarterfinal against continental rival Canada, who forced the game to overtime with a late goal, then later forced it to a penalty shootout with a stoppage time penalty kick at 120+7′. Ultimately Alyssa Naeher came through in the shootout, despite struggling in the match, blocking 3 out of 4 of Canada’s kicks. Lindsey Horan, Naeher and Sofia Smith scored in the shootout to secure the rain-soaked win for the USA.
Now, team USA will square off with the only remaining undefeated team in the tournament. Brazil went 3-0 in the Group Stage, beat rival Argentina 5-1 in the quarterfinal and shut out Mexico — the only team to beat the USA so far — 3-0 in the quarterfinal.
