The Town of Hamburg is in “active negotiations” with properties to secure a new location for a community center, Supervisor Randy Hoak said.
“Weโre trying to provide a building and a center consistent with what we’ve become used to,” Hoak said at a recent Town Board meeting. “I’m optimistic weโre going to be able to achieve that goal and I’m optimistic in the next few months weโll be able to give the public a better idea of what they can expect.”
The town’s Youth, Recreation and Senior Services Department and programs, including adult day care and senior lunches, are run out of a building at 4540 Southwestern Blvd. that Hamburg leases from the Frontier Central School District.ย
The town made $1.7 million in renovations to the building, and planned to purchase the former school after its 19-year lease was up.
Those plans changed last year, after the school district said it wanted to locate a new academic program in the building and state Education Commissioner Betty A. Rosa did not grant an extension of the lease beyond 10 years.
The state Education Department has determined the lease between Frontier Central School District and the Town of Hamburg for the building housing town senior programs must be terminated June 30.
