Jim Boeheim, Adrian Autry turn out for fundraiser for Syracuse Challenger baseball fields

Syracuse, N.Y. — The group pushing to add new baseball fields to the Carrier Park Field of Dreams in DeWitt says it raised more than $100,000 toward the project at a Saturday night event in Pompey.

Jim Boeheim, Adrian Autry and members of the Syracuse men’s basketball team and coaching staff turned out for the event at Heritage Hill Brewhouse.

The event, hosted by local businessman Vinny Lobdell and family, was to raise money toward a multi-million dollar expansion of the Syracuse Challenger baseball complex in DeWitt. Syracuse Mets General Manager Jason Smorol emceed the event.

Syracuse Challenger Baseball is a league for both adults and children from Central New York with disabilities.

Teams competed last summer at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Since it began in the 1980s, the league has grown to now include participation from 200 children and adults. Under current management, led by Dom Cambareri, the team has expanded their operations to include more divisions. The growing number of participants pushed management to expand their fields.

Expanding the field would not only allow more teams to play at the same time, but will also create a space for teams to play sports like softball and lacrosse.

Supporters can still donate to the Challengers here.
