Brooklyn Courts kickoff monthlong celebration of Black History Month

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — The Kings County Supreme Court kicked off Black History Month with its opening ceremony at the courthouse on Jay Street on Feb. 1.

This year’s theme is, “Black Resistance: Black Resilience, Undeterred Excellence,” and Dr. Hakim Lucas was the first guest of the court system to speak on that theme.

Lucas will hardly be the final speaker, though, as the Brooklyn courts go all out to celebrate the month. Each courthouse will host an event at least once, and the Supreme Court will host events nearly every other day. In fact, Friday, Feb. 10 is the only day this month where a courthouse will not host a BHM event.

Perhaps the biggest event of the month will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 28 when Brooklyn’s judges are the stars of a fashion show. They take off the robes for one afternoon and strut down the runway at 360 Adams St. It is always an exciting way to wrap up a memorable month for the court system.
