POUGHKEEPSIE – Angel Castro Llanos, charged with assault after attacking a person with a hammer, was convicted by a jury Friday in Dutchess County Court. Llanos beat his victim by hitting him in the head with a hammer on Main Street on November 6, 2022. He was arrested and charged with felony assault five days later.
The victim sustained serious head injuries as a result of the bludgeoning at the hands of the defendant.
Senior Assistant Dutchess County District Attorneys Scott Johnson and James Bryant prosecuted the case and were please with the guilty verdict returned by the jury on Friday afternoon in the courtroom of Dutchess County Court Judge Jessica Segal.
“In view of the evidence, the jury came to the only logical result: that the defendant intended to inflict physical injury upon his victim when the defendant chose to hit the man in the head with a hammer,” Prosecutor Johnson said. “The defendant’s self-defense claim was, ultimately, uncompelling,” he continued, adding “Striking a human being in the head with a hammer because that person pushed you away, at least here, was not a legally justifiable act.”
