Staten Island obituaries for Sunday, March 17

Joseph T. Brennan, 77, died Feb. 22, 2024. Born on Staten Island, he worked as a dispatcher with the Staten Island bus division for 28 years until retiring from the NYC Transit in 1996. In 1988, he and his wife Margie began building their new house in Cape Cod which they moved into in 1997. Upon moving to Cape Cod, Joe started a new career as an X-Ray Technician which he did for the next 11 years.

Rita Abraham, 69, died March 11, 2024. She raised her family on Staten Island and contributed much generosity, compassion and love to this world. She dedicated her life to raising and guiding her children and was a fierce ally and advocate for the LGBTQIA+ and Autistic communities, reads her obituary.

Thomas Leon Basile, 60, nicknamed “The Disaster Pastor,” died March 11, 2024 on Staten Island. Born in Texas, he was an Army Veteran with the 82nd Airborne prior to attending Dallas Theological Seminary: “He loved to help people and boasted often about getting to do it for free. Hurricane Sandy opened up the disaster relief chapter of his life. While serving as Outreach Pastor at New Dorp Baptist Church, Tom was instrumental in coordinating various volunteer groups from around the country that arrived on Staten Island. He became known as the Disaster Pastor! Coordinating these groups for years thereafter led to forging ties with churches,” reads his obituary.

Dorothy Scanlon, 85, a great-grandmother and native New Yorker, died March 14, 2024. She was born in Brooklyn, and lived in Westfield, then Scotch Plains, prior to moving to Mountainside, all of which are in New Jersey.

Madeline Barisciano, 90, a beloved mother and great-grandmother, died March 14, 2024 in Whiting, New Jersey. “She was a devoted mother, grandmother, grandmama, aunt and dear friend to all who knew her. She enjoyed caring for and cooking…
