STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Smiles, costumes and a festive air abounded at the Joan & Alan Bernikow JCC of Staten Island during the organizationโs annual Purim Carnival, held Sunday in Sea View.
The indoor festival featured a range of activities, including inflatables — with a busy slide — carnival games and a puppet show and performance by Chinese Theatre Works.
Orit Lender, CEO of the JCC, said, โOur annual Purim Carnival is a special day that brings families together to have fun and create memories.โ
The JCC said that this year families were โencouraged to dress as their favorite heroes or to wear blue and white in solidarity with the people of Israel.โ
Attendees also received a voucher for a free meal at Chickies, which will be opening its only Staten Island location at the Bernikow JCC later this month.
The organization said the festival of Purim recalls the story of how Queen Esther saved the Jewish people from death at the hands of the kingโs minister, Haman.
Today, Jews continue to celebrate the joyous holiday by wearing costumes, making noise with groggers (noisemakers), and eating hamantaschen, the tasty three-cornered cookies shaped like Hamanโs hat.
