Syracuse, N.Y. — Isaiah Johnson is Syracuse football’s best shot at a 2024 NFL Draft pick.
The defensive back was the sole Orange invitee to the annual scouting event held Feb. 29 to March 2 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
Johnson used all the normal clichés recounting the experience Monday and joked that the staff that conducted his medical exam knows his body better than even he does after the tests they conducted.
This year’s cornerback class is stacked though, and some analysts have floated the possibility of Johnson being shifted to safety at the next level after his testing ranked him on the slower side of the class.
It’s a potential positional move Johnson’s heard from teams he’s spoken with, too.
“I definitely have heard some chatter about that, and every time they ask me about it, I tell them that I see myself as a corner but at the end of the day I’m a football player,” Johnson said Monday. “If that’s what they want from me, then that’s what I’m willing to do.”
Johnson had his second showing in front of NFL scouts Monday as one of seven former Orange players who participated in SU’s Pro Day held at the Ensley Athletic Center.
Wide receiver D’Marcus Adams, offensive lineman Chris Bleich, quarterback Garrett Shrader, defensive lineman Caleb Okechukwu, defensive back Jason Simmons Jr. and linebacker Yosuke Sugano also participated.
Shrader, still recovering from a December surgery, did not do any testing, but spoke with team representatives and supported teammates. Okechukwu injured himself during his first 40-yard dash attempt and was unable to do any further on-field testing.
Representatives from over 25 NFL teams were in attendance. Official results from the event were not yet available at the time of publication.
