Center Moriches School District voters defeat $13.9M bond

Voters in the Center Moriches School District on Tuesday rejected a $13.9 million bond issue intended to repair the district’s aging facilities and protect students’ health and safety.

Voters defeated the proposal by a vote of 434 against and 227 yes votes in favor.

District officials were not immediately available for comment.

Local officials said the bond borrowing would have cost the average homeowner $111 a year in additional property taxes. Officials added that the state would reimburse 78% of costs over the 15 years required to pay off expenses.

The project would have led to multiple repairs and upgrades throughout the district, including security upgrades and new boilers at two schools.

Center Moriches’ latest plan was a pared-down version of a $45 million bond proposal, which was defeated by voters in October.

Superintendent Ron Masera said the referendum was preceded by months of discussion and a community survey, in which residents were asked what they considered key priorities for the district. The result, Masera said, were projects focused on immediate renovation and repair.
