How did Edith Holtermann get the nickname “Speedy Edie?” Her son explained, it was her boundless energy that earned her the soubriquet. “She couldn’t sit still,” said Dean Holtermann. “If she saw something a little out of place, she had to fix it.”

Edith Holtermann was a teacher and a lifelong Staten Islander. Her husband co-owned Holtermann’s Bakery, Staten Island’s oldest family business, where Edith often lent a helping hand. She passed away on March 8, at the age of 95.
