The top-ranked Hobart hockey team scored a pair of first period goals as it knocked off second-ranked Utica 3-1 at the Koeppel Community Sports Center this afternoon. With the win the Statesmen are 27-2-1 overall on the season and advance to the national championship game for the second straight season.
Sophomore forward Tristan Fasig led the way for the Statesmen with two assists. Sophomore Damon Beaver made 22 saves in the win.
Utica concludes the season with a 24-3-3 overall record. Ethan Roberts played just under 58 minutes in goal. He made 24 saves.
STREAKING
- Today’s win extends Hobart’s winning streak to 13 games.  Hobart is unbeaten in 24 straight games, posting a 23-0-1 record since its last loss.
SCORING SUMMARY
- Hobart opened the scoring 52 seconds into the game. Senior Austin Mourar fired a shot from the point through traffic and into the net. His eighth goal of the season never left the ice and found the lower left corner of the cage. It was assisted by Fasig and Tanner Daniels.
- Sophomore Tanner Hartman, who won the Elite 90 award yesterday, gave Hobart a 2-0 lead with his 20th goal of the season. Fasig had an assist on the tally. Hartman’s 20 goals this season are tied for 10th on Hobart’s single-season list.
- Michael Herrera ended Beaver’s shutout bid with his 12th goal of the season. Just before the midway point of the game, He stuffed a loose puck across the goal line. Drake Morse had an assist on the tally.
- Junior Shane Shell sealed the victory with an empty-net goal with 25 seconds remaining in regulation. His seventh goal of the season was assisted by fellow junior Luke Aquaro. It was Aquaro’s 99th career point.
KEY STATS:
- Hobart finished the game with a 27-23 edge in shots on goal.
- Neither team scored a power-play goal. Hobart was 0-for-2 with the man advantage and Utica was 0-for-3 with the extra attacker. The Statesmen have killed off 89 of their opponents 91 power plays this season.
