Rain and wind are buffeting the beginning of the weekend in the New York City metropolitan area, with precipitation expected throughout Saturday and gusts picking up in the afternoon.
The National Weather Service says the region should prepare for an inch and a half to three inches of rain, though some areas, like northeast New Jersey, parts of the lower Hudson Valley and southern Connecticut, could get even more. The agency said up to four inches of rain in localized areas is possible.
“It’s going to be wet from start to finish,” Jay Engle, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said Saturday.
A flood watch remains in effect for northern parts of the region, including Westchester and Rockland counties. Wind gusts of up to 45 to 50 miles per hour are also expected for Saturday afternoon into Sunday, according to a wind advisory.
No measurable snow is expected.
“For us, it’s going to be just warm enough that it’s a cold, nasty rain and wind event,” Engle said. “As the storm pulls away, could it mix in with a couple of snowflakes as it departs across far northern and northwestern areas later this evening? Can’t rule it out. But no accumulation.”
High temperatures are expected to stay in the 50s on Saturday before cooling overnight. Sunday is expected to be dry, though some strong winds could linger, Engle said.
