‘I’ve never seen anything like this’: Heavy rain floods Staten Island street

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — At least one Staten Island street was flooded Saturday due to the heavy rain that soaked the borough.

Maureen Serrano of West Brighton reached out to the Advance/SILive.com about the terrible conditions on North Burgher Avenue near Richmond Terrace.

“While today the rain is heavy and flooding is expected, what happens on North Burgher Avenue even on the lightest rainy day is disgusting,” she said.

When a reporter visited the location, the area outside Markham Gardens Manor senior complex had massive flooding that covered the street and sidewalk. The water could be seen covering the bottoms of tires of vehicles parked along the street.

Serrano said that whenever it floods, it makes it difficult for residents to walk down the street.

One man who tried walking through the flood waters that spilled over onto the sidewalk said he didn’t live on the block, but he was walking down it to catch a bus nearby.

“I don’t normally come down this way, but this is insane. I have to get to work and now my feet are soaked just trying to run through it,” he said. “I’ve never seen anything like this before. It’s even going onto the properties of the houses.”

According to Serrano, the flooding has been a persistant problem, and several complaints have been filed with 311.

“Numerous complaints fall on deaf ears,” she said.
