Grounds of Forest Lawn off-limits April 8 for watching the solar eclipse

Solar eclipse watchers who wanted to witness the once-in-a-lifetime celestial event from the hallowed grounds of Buffalo’s Forest Lawn on April 8 will need to make other plans.

The Forest Lawn Group has announced that the historic city cemetery, along with Lakeside Cemetery in Hamburg, will be closed to visitors that day. Only funeral processions will be allowed. They will reopen for visitors on April 9.

“On April 8,” the Forest Lawn Group said, “the cemeteries could attract significantly more visitors. Neither cemetery is designed as a venue for large gatherings, and because they are active cemeteries, the … priority is to ensure the safety and privacy for funeral services.”

The Forest Lawn Group’s other cemeteries include Williamsville Cemetery and Gethsemane Cemetery, both in Williamsville; St. Matthewโ€™s Cemetery in West Seneca, Lancaster Rural Cemetery in Lancaster, Oakwood Cemetery in East Aurora, Forest Hills Cemetery in Attica, Griffins Mills Cemetery in the Town of Aurora, the Freedom Cemeteries in the Town of Freedom and Quaker Settlement Cemetery in the Town of Warsaw.
