The New York Yankees will be without their usual leadoff hitter and third baseman when they open the season in Houston on Thursday.
General manager Brian Cashman told reporters Monday that DJ LeMahieu will not be ready for Opening Day and will start the season on the injured list.
LeMahieu is dealing with a significant bone bruise on his right foot from fouling a ball off it on March 16. He has been doing baseball activities over the last few days, but the Yankees don’t want to rush him.
Unless the Yankees make a late trade, it looks like Oswaldo Cabrera will get some starts at the hot corner to start the season.
