A 31-year-old NYPD officer was killed Monday night after being shot during an early evening traffic stop in the Queens neighborhood of Far Rockaway, according to authorities.
Two officers attempted to conduct a vehicle stop around 6 p.m. on Mott Avenue when a suspect inside the vehicle pointed a firearm towards the officers, NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban said during a press conference Monday night.
As shots rang out, Officer Jonathan Diller was hit in the torso underneath his bulletproof vest. His partner fired back, striking the suspect, 34, in the back.
โHe put himself in harmโs way,โ Caban said. โHe went towards the danger all to keep the people we serve safe and to protect his fellow New Yorkers.โ
Diller was transported to Jamaica Hospital in critical condition where he later succumbed to his injuries. The suspect was transferred to an area hospital in unknown condition.
โBecause of a senseless act, we witnessed a person who had a total disregard for the safety of this city,โ said Mayor Eric Adams. โI cannot say it any clearer; it is the good guys against the bad guys and these bad guys are violent.โ
