Cayuga County has spent over $3 million in 2023 to provide emergency housing for homeless residents in hotels and shelters, a cost that highlights the growing challenge of homelessness in the area.
The expenditure comes as the county grapples with increasing numbers of homeless individuals and families, assisting 455 adults and 175 children in 2023, up from 249 adults and 89 children in 2020.
In response to this issue, Housing Visions, a Syracuse-based nonprofit, proposed constructing an 80-bed emergency shelter, facing opposition and zoning challenges in Auburn.
Despite setbacks, plans for the shelter, which would include case management, support services, and on-site security, continue to move forward.
