School and city history will be made Saturday when the College of Staten Island women’s flag football team plays Village Maria College of Buffalo in doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at the Dolphins’ all-new turf field which was completed on campus last year.
The game is believed to be the first college flag football game contested in the five boroughs.
The Dolphins recently introduced Frank Jennaco as their head coach. Jannaco has made a name for himself in Island flag football circles as he is connected to the THT Flag Football travel program.
Although the Dolphins haven’t revealed their flag football roster, it should be sprinkled with Staten Islanders, who have excelled in the sport here for about a decade now.
FREE KIDS CAMP
The doubleheader will be preceded by a FREE workout for all pre-registered athletes ages — 13-and-older — from 9 a.m. through noon. The workout will be streamed for colleges not in attendance at the event and will give athletes the opportunity to showcase their skills in front of an audience of college coaches.
The event is being sponsored by the New York Giants and the New York Knights, a professional flag squad.
Those interested in registering for the morning workout can visit the official website of the New York Knights here.
ABOUT THE DOUBLEHEADER
Although this will be CSI’s first time playing a sanctioned game, the Vikings of Maria Regina are off to a 1-7 start, including three fall games — all played in Ontario. The Vikings have currently lost five straight games, including one against the University of Buffalo on March 3.
There are no Islanders on the Maria Regina roster.
