N.Y. Gov. Hochul details safety precautions taken after 4.8 magnitude earthquake, numerous aftershocks

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Gov. Kathy Hochul shed light on a series of safety precautions taken by state agencies following Fridayโ€™s unanticipated 4.8 magnitude earthquake.

โ€œMy top priority is keeping people safe, and I have directed state personnel to take all necessary precautions following yesterdayโ€™s historic earthquake,โ€ Gov. Hochul said. โ€œAt this time, we are aware of no injuries and minimal damage from this earthquake. We will continue monitoring the situation and updating New Yorkers as necessary.โ€

PRECAUTIONS TAKEN FOLLOWING THE EARTHQUAKE

Although no substantial damage has been reported at the time of publication, New York agencies have taken action to ensure the stability of state infrastructure and the security of its residents.

The New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services is predominantly serving in a preemptive role, ready to act at any given moment. The New York State Watch Center is in an โ€œenhanced monitoring modeโ€ tracking seismic activity in collaboration with the U.S. Geological Survey. The State Department reportedly continues to maintain contact with local counterparts.

Those concerned over the status of our bridges should note that following yesterdayโ€™s earthquake, the New York State Department of Transportation (NYDOT) deployed inspection teams across the state. Teams assessed hundreds of bridges and other critical infrastructure sites which yielded no reports of any immediate damage.

On the heels of Friday morningโ€™s tremors, the Department of Public Service (DPS) reached out to the various major utilities across the state, including Con Edison, O&R, PSEG LI, Central Hudson, NYSEG, RG&E and National Grid. DPS reports that there are no reported issues or trouble indicators traceable to the earthquake affecting electric, natural gas or steam systems.
