The New York Yankees opened a three-game series with the Miami Marlins in the Bronx on Monday night and came away with a 7-0 victory to improve to 9-2 on the season, the best record in Major League Baseball.
The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when New York put up a six-spot. Anthony Volpe, who is currently one of the hottest hitters in baseball, launched a three-run home run into the left-field seats to get the scoring started. Later in the inning, Juan Soto smacked one just inside the right-field foul pole for a three-run shot to make it 6-0. It was Volpeโs and Sotoโs second homers of the season.
New York added to its lead in the fifth as Alex Verdugo brought home Giancarlo Stanton with a single to center field. Verdugo finished 3-for-3 with a walk, which was his first multi-hit game as a Yankee.
Nestor Cortes, who struggled in his first two starts, tossed eight shutout innings while allowing just two hits and striking out six. Josh Maciejewski made his Major League debut in the ninth and retired all three batters he faced.
