Brooklyn legal community unites for suit drive to support local youth

The Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, with local bar associations and public defender groups, have launched a suit drive over the past two weeks, which will continue until May 8, aimed at providing professional attire to community members in need. The initiative is led by Melina Alexis-Hayes from the DA’s Office and by Farkas.

District Attorney Eric Gonzalez shared his personal connection to the initiative, recalling his days as a young DA wearing a suit to inspire local youth.

“It’s not just a piece of clothing. It allows them to go to job interviews, church and feel proud about their appearance,” Gonzalez added.

Michael Farkas comments on the quality of the donated suits to District Attorney Eric Gonzalez.

The suits collected will be distributed by BKLYN COMBINE, an organization that has been pivotal in mentoring young people. Although Kenneth Montgomery, who leads Brooklyn Combine, was not present, his impactful work was highlighted.

“Public safety involves giving individuals the opportunity to be successful, not just holding them accountable,” Gonzalez stated, emphasizing the broader impacts of such community initiatives.

Michael Farkas also spoke about the drive’s importance. “This suit drive showcases the true purpose of the criminal justice system, which is to administer justice and provide preventative measures to help people avoid reoffending,” said Farkas.
