Man who attempted to shoot NYPD officer in Brooklyn gets 19 years in prison

Raheen Joye, 43, of The Bronx, has been sentenced to 19 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree attempted murder. The sentence was announced by District Attorney Eric Gonzalez and was imposed by Supreme Court Judge Jane Tully. This comes following an incident in 2022 where Joye fired upon New York City Police Officers, wounding one.

โ€œPolice officers put their lives on the line every day while responding to all kinds of disputes. Luckily, Officer Orlando Adorno and the other responding officers were not seriously injured or killed by this defendantโ€™s decision to open fire on police,โ€ said DA Gonzalez. โ€œTodayโ€™s lengthy sentence holds him accountable for his actions.โ€

The sequence of events leading to Joyeโ€™s arrest began on the morning of Dec. 21, 2022, at an apartment on Gates Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Following an argument with his girlfriend that escalated to physical damage of property, Joyeโ€™s girlfriend called 911.

Responding to the call at about 8:50 a.m., officers encountered Joye and his girlfriend outside the apartment building. Despite initially cooperating, Joye attempted to flee upon learning of his impending arrest. In the ensuing struggle to detain him, Joye drew a blue handgun and fired, striking Officer Adorno in the foot.

The defendant then fled the scene, leading to a pursuit by multiple officers. Despite being pursued, Joye continued to pose a significant threat, brandishing his firearm and eventually engaging in a shootout with Officers Christopher Bowie and Alexander Bido on Monroe Street. The altercation concluded when Joye was incapacitated by police gunfire, after which he was apprehended.
