Sweet Home School Board leaders affirm Pride tassels can be worn at graduation

High school senior Moth Poydock took to the Sweet Home School Board lectern Tuesday evening to relay the importance of letting graduating seniors wear a Pride tassel if they so choose.

“What should be a time of celebration and excitement has been a time of frustration and disappointment,” said Poydock, a nonbinary student who uses they/them pronouns.

Moth Poydock,ย who is nonbinary, was thrilled to learn this spring that it was possible to wear a rainbow tassel to high school graduation. But days after several students picked up the tassels from a teacher, Sweet Home administrators told the student body that wearing them would violate commencement rules.

Poydock’s appearance came after they and other students received conflicting guidance in recent weeks about whether wearing the tassel would be allowed.

School Board President Amy Battaglia straightforwardly gave the answer Poydock, their mother and almost 20 supporters came to hear.

“Graduation is a special academic celebration for all students,” Battaglia said. “Our guidance allows for personalized decoration of the mortarboard as long as it is flat and does not hang down from the sides.
