Hunter Willett is a senior second baseman/pitcher for the Averill Park baseball team.
As a junior, Willett helped lead the Warriors to a Class A state championship. Averill Park is set to host Saratoga Springs on Wednesday in a Suburban Council contest featuring the 2022 Section II Class AA and A champions.
Q: People were excited to see the MLB season get underway last week. How much are you looking forward to getting back into the swing of a new season?
A: I am so excited. It is crazy being senior year. It’s like I don’t know what to think, it’s like holy crap it came so quick. We are finally starting to get back out on the field and I am excited to see what these guys can do. We need some guys to step up this year with guys battling a couple of injuries. I am just hoping everyone can step up and be a part of their role.
Q: I think the 2022 team worked well as a group. I know you have had time to process winning a state championship, but take me back to the run the team went on during the playoffs and how exhilarating it was?
A: It was crazy. Going to all the hotels and winning was probably the best experience of my life. I couldn’t believe it and was just proud of everybody and we worked though it. We got hot at the right time and everybody started clicking. It didn’t matter if it was just the dudes playing, we had guys on the bench invested and that is something that needs to be taken into consideration. I was a starter on the team. Watching what the guys were doing on the bench I thought was just amazing. I can’t give them enough credit for how much they cheered us on and gave us that energy to keep going and pushing. It meant a lot to me and the other guys out there.
Q: Thinking back to that team, it was a collection of a lot of good players without a superstar. Everyone pulled on the rope at the same time and it was entertaining to see…
