EAST GREENBUSH – The town plans to put the brakes on drivers by dropping the speed limit on town roads to 25 mph from the current 30 mph.
Concern about speeding on the town’s 304 streets is one of the main reasons for the proposal, according to information collected by the town and an engineering study required to make the drop
“We have received complaints about speeding in every neighborhood in East Greenbush,” Supervisor Jack Conway said Monday.
The move to reduce the speed limit over most of the 85 miles of roads in the 24-square-mile town is to let drivers know the town is serious about curtailing speeding.
“We want to send a message. Slow down in the town of East Greenbush,” Conway said.
Just seven town roads — American Oil Road, Discovery Drive, Ridge Road, Tempel Lane, Upper Mannix Road, Waters Road and Werking Road — will keep the 30 mph speed limit. The state highways, such as Columbia Turnpike, will also maintain their speed limits. The speed on those roads are set by the state.
In the Hampton Manor neighborhood, some residents said setting the 25 mph speed limit is a good move.

He said he didn’t know if the lower limit would inspire drivers to slow down.
Lindsay Sutton of New York Avenue said speeding has to be curtailed to protect children, pedestrians, dog walkers and other drivers.
A state law allowing municipalities to go to a 25 mph speed limit was approved in August. The cities of Albany, Schenectady and Troy began studying last year after the law took effect on whether to lower their speed limits.
