STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Following the arrest of man in connection with the shooting death of the father of a reputed gang leader, a police source told the Staten Island Advance/SILive.com that detectives are looking into the possibility that the man’s death was a targeted killing in retaliation for a previous incident.
It isn’t yet clear what that incident was. Here’s what we know so far:
SHOOTING IN STAPLETON
Diron Miller, 29 of Wayne Street in West Brighton, was arrested Tuesday in connection with the death of John Pena Sr., 53, who lived on Meadow Lark Place in Philadelphia, according to a statement from the NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner of Public Information.
Pena Sr. was found with a gunshot wound to the chest on Nov. 28 at around 5:30 p.m. in front of 197 Broad St., according to police. Pena Sr. was apparently standing outside in the vicinity of the Stapleton Houses when two men shot multiple rounds toward him, striking him in the chest, police said.
He was transported by EMS to Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton, where he died at about 8:50 p.m., police said.
Pena Sr. was later identified as the father of reputed “Gorilla Stone Mafia” gang leader John Pena, according to police sources.

The younger Pena, also known as “Tragedy” and “Traj,” is accused of shooting and killing Mark Bajandas, of Mariners Harbor, while Bajandas was visiting the memorial of a former Gorilla Stone Mafia member, Avanti Brock, who was killed in 2020.
The Gorilla Stone Mafia is a subset of the Untouchable Gorilla Stone Nation, both of which are factions of the Bloods national street gang.
Pena, who is currently behind bars, is also linked to another fatal shooting, as he is accused of killing Francisco (Franky) Gonzalez, 23, in June 2021, while the victim slept in his New Brighton home.
