Cam Newton still believes that there aren’t 32 quarterbacks better than him in the NFL, but he’s also open to backing up certain quarterbacks in the league.
In a recent podcast appearance, Newton listed 12 quarterbacks that he would be willing to backup in 2023. Among his list was Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.
Newton did not elaborate on why he was willing to backup Allen as he did for some of the other quarterbacks on the list, but he has said he was a fan of Allen in the past. In addition to being a fan of Allen, Newton would probably also be open to playing in Buffalo to reunite with Ken Dorsey. Dorsey, now Buffalo’s offensive coordinator, was Newton’s QBs coach during his MVP season with the Panthers.
“I’m a big fan of Josh and he’s actually getting coached by a person I know extremely well in Ken Dorsey,” Newton said back in 2020. “He was my quarterback coach the year I won the MVP.”
Considering that Newton did not play anywhere last season, the quarterback would probably want to land in a spot where he has some familiarity with the coaching staff. In addition to Dorsey, Newton is also very familiar with head coach Sean McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane.
Although Newton is willing to play for certain teams this season he also knows that some do not have backup jobs available.
“When you think about the list, it’s really to the point,” Newton said on the podcast. “Some of those guys may already have penciled in backups that franchise is probably okay with and that’s fine. I’m just voicing my own opinion and I’m just getting the narrative out.”
Buffalo is among the teams that have a penciled in backup. The team signed Kyle Allen to serve as their No. 2 quarterback in 2023. Kyle Allen previously backed up Newton in Carolina, but at this point in their respective careers Allen is a better backup option than Newton.
