GUILDERLAND – Albany County has started placing Narcan at several public facilities throughout the county to help prevent overdose deaths from heroin and other opioids.
Narcan is the brand name for naloxone, a medication that can quickly reverse an opioid overdose.
County Executive Dan McCoy announced the new program, part of a partnership with Catholic Charities, Wednesday at the Guilderland Public Library.
Narcan kits are already installed at the Albany Public Library’s Washington Avenue branch, the Berne library, the University at Albany and the Capital City Rescue Mission in Albany.
The county saw 132 overdose deaths in 2022, more than triple the number it saw in 2015. Fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid, was present in more than 82 percent of the 2022 overdose deaths.
